Software engineering is mutating

· originally on LinkedIn

Software engineering is mutating. Here’s what I’m seeing from the inside.

  • 95% of the code I ship is now AI-written. Not a typo.

  • It feels like the 2010s JS craze all over again. New frameworks every week, best practices changing monthly. Exciting, yes, but my “JS fatigue” PTSD is already tingling.

  • You still can’t skip the thinking part. Throwing a vague feature idea at Claude and hoping for magic? Doesn’t work. Just like with humans, no spec = no good output.

  • But here’s the thing: Claude isn’t just a code generator anymore. PR reviews, technical specs, product thinking-it handles all of it. The output needs challenging, sure. But LLMs aren’t lazy. They consistently match the focus and thoroughness I can only hit at 110%. And I can’t be at 110% all day.

  • The product engineer role is shifting. Less “crafting apps through code,” more “building AI-driven app factories.” - and let me tell you I’m a gamer and spent hundreds of hours on Factorio, I’m well prepared.

And we’re just getting started. Agent-native apps aren’t mainstream yet, but I suspect we’re heading toward another web 2.0 moment - where we rebuild every app, every service, with AI at the core.
